Look for a special guest to ride in the vehicle leading the runners around the course during the Elite race!

Elite Girls:

It's a 1,2,3 showdown with FW Carroll making it 4 of the top 5 depending on which poll you look at. 11 or 12 ranked teams, this is truly a state preview and could be a precursor to the finish at state. Presuming Carmel runs their top six 2 weeks in a row which you figure they will as they will be able to enjoy plenty of rest during the first rounds of the tournament. Without Rohrer, it appears to be a showdown with Lancioni, Welch, and Caldwell. Who else will step up to challenge for a top 5 finish?

Elite Boys:

It may not be a 1,2,3 showdown but we have 14 of the top 25 and 6 of the top 10, can CN rebound from a Flashrock loss to knock off Carmel, will Carmel race it's top 7, who is going to position themselves for a podium run come November 2nd? All of these questions to be answered plus the NPSS has a true SS preview with WL in the elite race and will see how they stack up against the 2 best teams in the state. Side show would have to be the race between 3 of the states best sophomores with Williams, Veatch, and Law getting a crack at each other.

Is that the reason for the schedule change? The elite teams will run 3 hours after their jv teammates.

Varsity teams will be allowed to run 8 or 10 runners per race -- depending on the race -- rather than the usual limit of seven.

Bad news! The special guest will not be appearing after all ... medical issues.

FYI:

The size of the field for the Elite races, as well as the start time of 1 p.m., are designed to simulate the state finals.

Obviously, it is not exactly the same. But the idea is to have it be similar to what many of these same runners will see in Terre Haute in early November.

Why 8 to 10? It should be kept at 7. Are only 7 positions going to be scored? This could have an impact on the team finish and gives an unfair advantage to larger schools. The 8 thru 10 runners should be scored as an individual with no impact on the team standings.

That's exactly what happens. Runners after the seventh are not factored into the scoring at all.

More and more regular season meets are going to an extended varsity. This is a huge advantage because most schools would have a hard time pinning down a top seven in August and into September. I know a coach at one of the elite schools in Indiana who said that of his 12 teams that have qualified for state, 11 of them had a at least one runner who ran in the JV at the first meet. It gives more athletes a chance to get varsity experience that they may need in October (or future years) and gives runners outside the top seven a better and more fair chance to get into the top seven, increasing competition for each team.

I would recommend more regular season meets go to an extended varsity (either ten or 12). There are definitely some larger schools that factor this into their decision when choosing August and September meets.
