What up kids. I thought these training blogs were cool so I'm glad that I got my own now. You guys already know what to do. Ask any questions about my training, IU, wii sports, Phineus and Ferb, Maybe even Futsum (as a runner and as a person) since he happens to be a popular topic on this website haha, or anything else and I will be glad to answer

Ok, my first question is about Futsum haha, but are you guys related? With redshirting at IU, how much freedom do you have in your training that first year? Will rooming with Overway influence how you train or will you do your own thing most of the time?

Haha I'm glad you asked that first question. When i was a sophomore and Futsum was a freshmen, A newspaper had came out that we were in. The newspaper said something along the lines of "Futsum (first row, third from left), his brother bahelbi (2nd row far right) and their cousin Filimon (first row far left) inject a new attitude....blah blah blah etc." Futsum thought that was funny because we're not related at all but continued to tell people we were cousins anyway and i admit i played along with it too but no we aren't cousins. It was all a small joke we were playing on people but it backfired because my sister got engaged to his brother so now we're like futsure brothers-in-law and some people still think we're cousins so that was weird haha.

About Redshirting, I didn't completely know the answer so I phoned a friend haha. I called up one of my future teammates just now who would have a better insight since he just went through it. Hael O'Herron said that Coach Helmer (the IU head coach for men and womens track and cross country) will give us a range, (For example mine is 45-55), And we just run that based on how we feel. He'll write the workouts for us and we'll obviously do those as told but as far as Mileage goes, every runner will get a range and they have to hit that depending on how they feel and they suggest we meet with Coach Helmer twice a week to talk about our training and If you're consistently hitting the high part of the range no problem than he'll increase the range which is what we want obviously. If you are struggling however, the range will lower. There is no specific thing that we are supposed to run though everyday. Meaning lets say I'm doing 50. Coach Helmer isn't going to tell me what to run everyday. I could do 15 one day then 6 the next then split it up to 5 and 6 the next day and its basically whatever you want as long as you meet your range. Thats not just for redshirting freshmen though, that goes for all the runners at IU. It's basically about being disciplined enough to make sure you do your runs without anyone forcing you to. You can lie but the stopwatch won't.

I definitely think rooming with Overway will influence my motivation and how hard I work. Like i said, we all have our own range and Kyle runs way more miles than i do therefore our runs won't be the exact same but as far as getting me up in the morning to do a morning run with him (even if i only do 7 while he does 10) or stuff like that, I know for a fact that Kyle is the best roomate i could have for that. I'm actually really excited about rooming with Kyle because of his dedication to the sport. I'm hoping that'll rub off on me.

Hey Fili,

Couple quick questions.

#1. Tell me about your Purdue visit and the experience that you received from it?

#2. I heard a rumor that Ryan Cutter may sneak in and live in your dorm room with you and Kyle? Can you comment on this.

Hahaha well my Purdue visit started off with me being late cuz i had to pick up my host/ex teammate (Connor Geshay) and saw that Kyle Overway, Josh Genet, Tyler Wynne, and Ryan Cutter were there also. Me Ryan and Kyle (due to several incidents during the visit) were not liked at all by Coach Holt. It's cool though because a beautiful friendship started from there and Now Kyle and I are roomies at IU while Ryan Cutter is gonna be coming down ALL the time to sleep and cuddle with me and Kyle^_^

#1 You've made it pretty clear that you prefer xc to track, do you still expect to run track in college?

#2 Is Futsum a person a sort of quiet/keep to himself person? I don't really hear much of him building close relationships with fellow runners like a lot of high schoolers do.

Yes, Im sure if i had the same track times but slower xc times, IU wouldn't even be interested in me. However, i will be running track also. I think i'll be better in college at track just cuz they have loner distances on the track. My reason for not being as good in track is cuz I'm more of an endurance guy rather than speed. At semi-state in xc, i was at 9:37 at the 2 mile mark and at that time, 9:37 was also my PR for the 3200. I guess that doesn't make sense for alot of people but I'm just straight up more endurance than speed, WAYYYYYYYYYYYYYY more haha. The longer i go the better i am. I'm guessing I'll even be better in the 8k than i am in the 5k. We'll see though.

I wouldn't say Futsum is a quiet person. He can be really funny at times. It's just with him not being as adapted to America, its hard for him to have alot of stuff in common with Americans. It's more of a cultural thing rather than a being shy. When he's around all of his eritrean friends, however, he's very talkative and funny and all around social.

How did your training progress would you say from early July to the state meet in October? What were some key workouts that you guys did?

Obviously we're less worried about workouts in july. Its more of building a base. I say i did about 35 miles a week in june and 40mpw in july. I'd say about a total of 4 or 5 workouts during then, maybe less. The workouts will just be 1000m repeats. During the season we'll do K repeats once a week. Consistency was very important. If your body is used to the same schedule every week then it'll know what to expect and you will be able to perform well cuz ur body will kno when its time for it to race. As far as progression, idk. we pretty much keep it the same the entire team except throw in a workout every week during season. Nothing complex.

Hey Filimon can you describe what happened to you at the state meet this year in the 3200? It looked like through the first half of the race you were up front running in your usual spot next to Futsum. Did the early fast pace (4:32 first mile) just burn you out?

Good question. Due to some personal reasons dealing with issues at home and everything, i was barely able to train the first few days after regionals. That just made me realize that i was not going to be able to compete at my highest level at the state meet and honestly was thinking about not running the state meet all together. However, me and futsum talked and i figured i could at least help him win the 3200. Every race that Futsum lost in the 3200 was due to it going out slow and him getting outkicked. I was gonna try and lead the race to a fast pace for a mile then let Futsum due his thing assuming that everyone would try to make it a slow race so they can outkick futsum to win. When we started the race, i was rushing to the front and turns out that John Mascari had the same game plan. He also knew that if the race went out fast then that would make it much harder for guys that doubled to be in contention. So we started and Big John was leading a nice fast pace so i just hung on just incase the pace would slow down again randomly like it did at MIC. After the first mile once i saw it was a nice fast pace, i allowed futsum to pass me on the inside and then just basically gave up. I was already super tired and definitely was not in the best shape i could've been. Like i said, the personal issues at home led to all-nighters and no running and several other mistakes on my part that could have been avoided. My only regret is that i took a kids spot at the state meet that definitely deserved to be there over me. Had i have known all that stuff would've come up then i would've scratched at regionals and let jason Hoard i believe it would've been run the state meet instead.

Im assuming that since both you and Kyle are not blogging anymore that the coaches st IU asked you not to. If so, fair enough.

I was one of the people who actually believed you and Futsum were cousins. Shocked.
