Haha I'm glad you asked that first question. When i was a sophomore and Futsum was a freshmen, A newspaper had came out that we were in. The newspaper said something along the lines of "Futsum (first row, third from left), his brother bahelbi (2nd row far right) and their cousin Filimon (first row far left) inject a new attitude....blah blah blah etc." Futsum thought that was funny because we're not related at all but continued to tell people we were cousins anyway and i admit i played along with it too but no we aren't cousins. It was all a small joke we were playing on people but it backfired because my sister got engaged to his brother so now we're like futsure brothers-in-law and some people still think we're cousins so that was weird haha.
About Redshirting, I didn't completely know the answer so I phoned a friend haha. I called up one of my future teammates just now who would have a better insight since he just went through it. Hael O'Herron said that Coach Helmer (the IU head coach for men and womens track and cross country) will give us a range, (For example mine is 45-55), And we just run that based on how we feel. He'll write the workouts for us and we'll obviously do those as told but as far as Mileage goes, every runner will get a range and they have to hit that depending on how they feel and they suggest we meet with Coach Helmer twice a week to talk about our training and If you're consistently hitting the high part of the range no problem than he'll increase the range which is what we want obviously. If you are struggling however, the range will lower. There is no specific thing that we are supposed to run though everyday. Meaning lets say I'm doing 50. Coach Helmer isn't going to tell me what to run everyday. I could do 15 one day then 6 the next then split it up to 5 and 6 the next day and its basically whatever you want as long as you meet your range. Thats not just for redshirting freshmen though, that goes for all the runners at IU. It's basically about being disciplined enough to make sure you do your runs without anyone forcing you to. You can lie but the stopwatch won't.
I definitely think rooming with Overway will influence my motivation and how hard I work. Like i said, we all have our own range and Kyle runs way more miles than i do therefore our runs won't be the exact same but as far as getting me up in the morning to do a morning run with him (even if i only do 7 while he does 10) or stuff like that, I know for a fact that Kyle is the best roomate i could have for that. I'm actually really excited about rooming with Kyle because of his dedication to the sport. I'm hoping that'll rub off on me.
