I was beyond surprised to see all these fast times from the meet we held this past weekend. To be honest, if someone told me the winning time was in the 15:20's, I would have laughed, normally our course runs noticeably slow. Surprisingly, that was not the case.
With the wood chips, our course normally runs about 10-20 seconds slow, but due to the rain the night before, the wood chips were compacted down into the surface a bit. The weather was ideal and the races were taken out fast. I was in the lead group whom came across the first K at 3:02 and the first mile at 4:56, so with the weather being on our favor and the race having a quick start, the race was already being set-up to have quick times.
When I finished and saw the clock, I was stunned to see that I was going to run a PR. I finished, turned around, and saw many of my teammates running impressive times. Some had PR's over 1 minute. It seemed that everyone had an impressive day on the course.
I can assure you the course is 5K. It's exactly 5 Kilometers, I gurantee it. The course has been wheeled numerous times, and I personally have GPS'd it at least 30 times this season. The fast times are not due to a short course; the course is the appropriate distance.
I believe the reason for the fast times are for the following reasons:
1) Ideal weather
2) An aggressive starting pace
3) Great course conditions (the boys race avoided the rain. Although the girls ran in the rain, the wood chips prevented any muddy spots.)
I agree that everyone ran times faster than normal, but I promise you it is not because the course is short.
Just doing what I can to represent Indiana track & field.
