DUBOIS — The Bedford North Lawrence boys and girls cross country teams ran the table at the Northeast Dubois Jeep Invitational Tuesday, coming home with all the hardware from the varsity and junior varsity races.

The BNL girls followed up their Hoosier Hills Conference title run on Saturday with another outstanding effort, putting four girls in the top 10 and finishing with 40 points to easily get past Dubois, which settled for second with 75.

“It’s a tough course, so I gave them a little slower pace today, especially knowing how hard they ran Saturday,” said BNL girls coach Kathy Hammel. “It was the last regular season race and I think they were still pumped up from their accomplishment Saturday and they all went out way too fast.

“But to their credit, they held their positions and that just shows how strong they are.”

Washington’s Chloe Heller won the race in 19:39, while senior Samantha Sheldon led the Stars with a second-place finish in 20:01.

Danielle Page was close behind in sixth, earning “Best Freshman Runner” honors with a time of 21:10, while Elizabeth Sheldon was eighth (21:15), Hannah Guthrie was ninth (21:16) and Bret Roberts wound up 15th with a time of 22:10.

“Some of the girls were disappointed in their times, but I was very happy,” said Hammel. “For them to go out that hard and fast and still be able to hold their positions is exciting for me to see. Now they just have to realize how powerful they are and what they’ve accomplished through all the training and conditioning.

“It was another team effort and a fun way to end the regular season.”

Whitley Crane wound up 19th (22:19) and Courtney Crane came in 22nd (22:26) to round out the field for the Stars in the varsity race

“The girls are running so well together and the rotation in the order is exciting to see,” said Hammel. “They’re pushing each other and supporting each other and that makes everyone better.

“What they did today is the kind of effort I want to see at semistate. All they have to do now is believe in themselves and the strength they have. This is where we want to be heading into the tournament and I think it’s all going to come together. Team unity translates into top-notch performances pretty much top to bottom.”

Freshman Lauren Boshears won the JV race with a personal-best time of 23:01, while fellow freshman Alli Guthrie grabbed second (23:11) and Mallory Goffinet was third with a PR of 23:42 as the top three Stars put nearly a minute between themselves and the rest of the field.

“Lauren did an outstanding job,” said Hammel. “That was her best time of the year and we took spots 1, 2 and 3 and nobody really threatened our first three runners.”

Kali Payton added a PR (25:15) to finish 11th, while Morgan Watkins came in 13th (25:31), Meredith Moore wound up 18th (26:09) and Adison Watkins finished 36th in 30:48.

The BNL boys rebounded from a disappointing third-place finish in the conference to put five runners in the top 11 Tuesday to finish with 33 points.

Tell City was a distant second with 71, while Dubois settled for third (83) in the 11-team field.

“I think we’ve been going down there for four or five years now and we’ve won more than we’ve lost,” said BNL boys coach Scott Hiles. “I thought they all had excellent races today. Their positioning at the beginning was great and they moved up throughout the race. That’s what they’ve done in the past when we’ve done well and they’ll continue to do well if they attack a race in that way.”

Dubois’ Josh Genet won the race in 15:51, finishing just ahead of BNL senior Logan Barrett (16:01), who easily took second, despite a mishap during the race.

“Logan was leading the race and lost his footing going around a corner and fell down,” Hiles noted. “To his credit, he got back up and ran an excellent race. I’m sure that fall accounted for at least five of the 10 seconds he got beat by, but he was still very close to an excellent runner from Dubois.”

Lane Barrett finished fourth in 17:01, while Clayton Orender took sixth (17:08), Aaron Zollman was 10th (17:23) and Brady Martin wound up 11th in 17:28.

“Brady’s made a big breakthrough in the last three weeks,” said Hiles. “He’s gone from that 7, 8 and 9 spot to the fourth or fifth spot. He’s working to stay with Lane and Clayton, so he’s been a big help to us.”

Tyler Wilson finished 16th (17:43) and Bryce Williams wound up 34th with a time of 18:32.

The Stars also shined in the JV race where Levi Scherschel won with a time of 18:54, while Evan Yeary was second (19:03), Joel Clampitt took fourth (19:27), Kyle Diekhoff came in fifth (19:44) and Austin Voorhies was 10th in 20:40.

“They understand in order for us to get through the semistate we have to race well now,” said Hiles. “And I think both the varsity and JV guys were ready to run tonight.

“We were missing Devin King on our JV team tonight and had he been here, I think we would have had a perfect score.”

Hunter Maddox (12th, 20:46), Ryan Diekhoff (27th, 22:48), Aaron Fehler (29th, 23:16) and Dason Neff (39th, 28:18) rounded out the field for the Stars, who will play host to sectional action Tuesday.
