rumor is that brogan armand established new usatf youth indoor 3000 mark running 9:40, without being pushed in his age division. he also reportedly ran 4:29 for his 1500. have to see how he does at usatf youth indoor nationals at illinois state on march 10-11. xavier johnson, and matthew smith were third and fourth in same race, running 10:05, 10:03 respectively, and 4:43, and 4:54 in 1500. mitch harris ran 9:43 in young men division 3000, i believe he runs for central high school during cross country season but is currently running for evansville thunderbolts rc, as are armand, johnson, and smith. luke bays a fifth grader ran a 11:25 for 3000, and 5:33 for 1500. he to runs for thunderbolts. heard this was first indoor meet ever for all these runners. there were lots of complaints from coaches and runners in the dustance events about the nine hour time peroid it took from time 3000 was completed until 1500 was ran. my understanding is they had over 600 runners with most doing sprint events something like 75 heats of sprint racing, and meet was held all on sunday.

USATF uses a two-year division scheme. Here is this year's:

Divisions
Using 12/31/2012 to calculate age
division descript. low age high age entry limit
1 Sub-Bantam 0 8 3
2 Bantam 9 10 3
3 Midget 11 12 3
4 Youth 13 14 4
5 Intermediate 15 16 4
6 Young 17 19* 4
Note: The age-up date for Young is determined using the last day of the USATF YOUTH National Championship meet, 07/29/2012.

AAU breaks the categories down further using a one-year scheme for several of the divisions:

Divisions
Using 12/31/2012 to calculate age
division # descript. low age high age entry limit
1 Primary 0 8 3
2 Sub-Bantam 9 9 3
3 Bantam 10 10 3
4 Sub-Midget 11 11 3
5 Midget 12 12 3
6 Sub-Youth 13 13 4
7 Youth 14 14 4
8 Intermediate 15 16 4
9 Young 17 19* 4
Note: The age-up date for Young is determined using the last day of the AAU National Championship meet, 08/06/2012.

Explaining the asterisks (what is "age-up"): If you are not yet 19 on the date of the (respective) National you can compete in the Young class from January 1st until that National. All other categories use the last day of the calendar year to determine the division in which you must compete. There are no "move-ups", no exceptions! (You can Not compete in an older division).

Entry Limit: is the number of events you are allowed enter.

Generally all event entries are handled through a website commonly called "Coach-O". An athlete must already have a current, approved membership in AAU or USATF to register. Clarifying, these are two distinct organizations and an event will be offered by one or the other. The following link will show the current event calendar (2012), as the year progresses events will be continually added. This same calendar is used for Indoor, Outdoor T&F events and for XC. The 2012 Indoor started Dec. 1st and will be winding down around mid-March. 2012 Outdoor will start post-school and end early August. the 2012 XC will start post-school XC season and end by mid-December.

Check out the current, recent past calendar at this link:

http://coachoregistration.com/calendar/meet/calendar.html

Suggestion: To gain familiarity click on an event of interest, current or past. Navigate about, there is a bit of a learning curve, but once a meet has been entered, the next meet entry will be a repetitious task. Parental/Coach consent is required. Some in-State events also require a State Ath Dept submission release to be sent, for some areas. To apply for membership visit AAU.org or USATF.org

*Note: This is my general description of the process. Exact wording and rules of the two organizations may vary, or may change. I strongly recommend that any Parent considering enrolling an Athlete for these non-school activities conduct direct discussion with all of their athlete's coaches before any steps are taken.

There is a third alternative to USATF or AAU. It is CYO. I am not familiar with the CYO program but do want to mention it.
For the post-school Outdoor Track Youth programs there an entity called Elite Youth that compiles results and honors athletes through their website. They maintain season best for the age groups as defined by the USATF divisions but include AAU, USATF, and CYO Outdoor results. Top 20 Athletes receive recognition as All-Americans, Top 50 are provided linked webpages, and top 100 are honor roll athletes. The Elite Youth Homepage has descriptive links to the three organizations and can be found here:

http://www.eliteyouth.com/index.asp

The basic function of Elite Youth is to provide a service similar to the IndianaRunner Leaderboard, on a nationwide scale for events run under the jurisdiction of the 3 organizations. Here is a link to one of the leaderboards from 2011:

http://www.eliteyouth.com/rf2011/rf2011.asp?DCODE=MG&ECode=3000

If you choose to visit the USATF.org homepage scroll to the bottom and under "Groups" click on "Youth Athletes" for the best entry point pertaining to this topic.
