Interesting question... Tapring ask the question if she was the first "mixed" state champion. Since it was not a very PC question to ask I had not ask it to this point but since we are on the subject does anyone have the answers to these questions?

I don't see their color and this topic is not a good one. I simply see runners and I don't think this should even be an issue much less talked about. I don't see alot of white women in the Miss Black America Pagent does that mean anything? Who cares. I'm glad see to them winning and not making an issue of their color. Why do we have to make an issue of this? You have nothing else to talk about besides their color. Get on another topic and talk about how great they are and the effort they give not their color, you minimize everything they work for and it is just simply divisive. Admin delete this topic and let's talk about their accomplishments and not their color. We shouldn't care what color they are.

I just thought it was interesting and was curious to see if this was the first time. There arent many black runners in our state.

You can always tell a persons true colors by the books they read and the people they meet. If you were a decent person "idontrun" you would refrain from writing garbage like this. You might as well get used to seeing both of the runners around for several more years, afterall they are here to stay and compete!

somebody just answer the guys question and lets move on. some of you are trying to make him out to be a racist for asking a simple question. as you know, the media had a field day with 'our' first black president, and nobody called the media racist. just answer the damn question and let it go.

Chill out everybody.

Seriously, it is completely fine to talk about race/nationality/etc, as long as you do so in a respectful manner, which I believe idontrun did in his question. In professional running all you hear about is people's nationalities. Was it not ok for the NYC marathon announcers to say that Meb is originally from Eritrea? Honestly, it is fine. Don't try to make this any more taboo to talk about than it already is.

Had a foreign exchange student won the state title (and has happened in Michigan) the question would be being ask if that was the first time a foriegn exchange student had won the state title and you would likey not be offended by that. The orignal question was worded poorly since Futsom is actually "African" and Tapring is of "african american" decent so drawing a line of comparision between them is odd but there was no malice in asking the question, so if you know the answer to the question please let us know, if not, please move on.

Thanks.

This is what I dislike about people. Everybody thinks if you say anything about a person's color you are meaning it in a negative way. A guy asks a simple question and gets destroyed. My daughter is of African-American descent and at no time in reading the question did I feel like it was wrong in anyway.

I too get so tired of everyone making things a race issue! This question has nothing to do with that! What if the winners this year both had red hair and someone asked if that was a first? There would be no problem with that question. Sheez! This country and the obsession with race, even when there is no malice intended or implied, is over the top.

I am curious as to Tapring's ethnicity. It interests me to know about runners, especially in a sport that is not known for a lot of cultural diversity. Could anyone share?

There is nothing wrong with this thread. It doesn't even say anything about Futsum and TaPring winning because they are of African descent. It is a fair question.
