College Commitments and Signing Days

Postby Drake on Tue Nov 22, 2011 11:03 am

Attention Seniors!

IndianaRunner wants to cover your signing and be the first to get the word out on your college commitment! Email me @ dsterling4@gmail.com if you have made your decision or have plans for a signing. If resources allow it, we would love to cover it! Obviously it would be hard to be everywhere in the State but we will try!

Good luck in your search!

For future reference, I will need confirmation from either the athlete or coach through email or PM for college commitments. Unfortunately, its not that I dont trust everyone but I can't confirm what is posted under anonymous message board names on this thread. That's how rumors get started ;)

This has been a great start to the signing season!

I have talked to Futsum's coaches and they have informed me that this is not true. Futsum still has many visits to take and is not yet close to making a commitment.

UNOFFICIAL word is that Tyeson Mundy (Terre Haute North) has committed to IU. Not confirmed yet but definitely a good start for IU recruiting if its true.

I heard the IU coach didn't want to recruit in-state talent anymore... clearly that isn't the case

When I talked to him he said he was recruiting quite a bit in-state.
"If we have great runners in our own backyard, then why not focus on them?" Is roughly a quote I remember him saying.

Here is my impression from talking to guys on the Cross Team at IU. Helmer doesn't think that there is anybody in the state besides Futsum who is worth giving any money to this year. He thinks the talent level is down in the state. I have also heard that there are several high schools that he doesn't want guys from (but he isn't the only coach in this state with that philosophy). Clearly Terre Haute North is not one of those schools as Mayhew and Mascari (although short lived) have been two of his most successful runners over his tenure. I'm guessing he recruited Mundy pretty hard after his history with Mundy's teammates.

Yes, I completely agree. Coach Helmer echoed that statement completely. However, I would like to clarify this statement.
Helmer doesn't think that there is anybody in the state besides Futsum who is worth giving any money to this year

You have it exactly right as it is in that statement. He believes that the only person that can give them an immediate impact their freshman year, is Futsum. Thus, he is the only one that will be offered athletic money. However, he did not necessarily say that the talent pool was down. As a matter of fact, there were hardly any money given out to last years class in the form of athletic aid. I know many of their runners received academic aid (Kyle Overway was a lily scholar) and some received a bit of financial aid, but I have been informed that hardly any money has been given out to their current freshman class. The philosophy at IU is that the school will look to 'reward' the students with athletic based aid after they have proven they can be productive in college. IU has done a fantastic job of taking 4:05 milers in high school, and making them 4:00 minute guys, but also have taken 4:30 milers in high school and have made them 4:00 minutes as well. Accordingly, they normally wait till the end of a runners freshman or sophomore year to give out athletic aid. However, Helmer has stated that he believes Futsum can make an impact immediately (which many of us most likely agree on) and is thus willing to give him some athletic aid his first year.

Thought I would clarify this subject, and maybe show a somewhat interesting recruiting aspect that has clearly shown to be successful with IU's recent success.
