Looks pretty solid. I think you need to give Crown Point a second look. Contrary to IHSAA results, Lauren McCarroll will be returning next year as she is in 10th grade - not 12th.

Colin - I'm curious why you have Carmel moving up one spot (they lose their #5 runner), Terre Haute moving up seven spots (they lose their #5 runner), Noblesville moving up one spot (they lose their #4,6,7 runners).....and then overlook Huntington i lieu of West Noble. Huntington loses only their #5 runner too.

TH North moves up that much because
1. Chanli Mundy ran 18:26 this season but ran the state finals with the flu (only finshed 44th)
2. Emily Cotterman got injured at Culver and did not run the post season (19:26 in 08)
3. Jessi Conley from Otter Creek is the top 8th grader in the state of Indiana and she will be a freshman at North Next year

Ow and they return the individual state champ... which ALWAYS helps. Colin looked at more than JUST the state finals.

I'm not challenging the assessment of THN, just wondering why Huntington North got bumped by West Noble.

Sorry. Don't know the answer to that. Since much of this will likely change after track, what are your thoughts on why they should be the other way?

Carmel is not losing their fifth. The top five come back next year. You are just looking at the state final results and are forgetting Alex Chitwood is not normally the 7th runner. Terre Haute North looks very strong as well and I think on paper you have it right picking those 2 first for preseason.

I just kind of eyeballed it without too much thought. When I do my whole top 50 in the summer, if I'm still on staff next year, it could look much different (especially after a whole track season.

However, Huntington loses its fifth runner while West Noble brings back its entire top six. The gap was only 13 points at the state finals, and West Noble beat the Vikes at the semistate. I gave Portage the nod over Huntington because the Indians seemed like the much better team for most of the season and ran, what I thought to be, a subpar race at the state finals. I did have Huntington at number ten before being informed that one of Crown Point's listed seniors was actually a junior.

Of course, the girls preseason rankings don't really have much bearing to what things look like in October, so the pre-preseason rankings are completely useless and made only to give us something to chew on for a while.

I think next year you could see West Noble even higher than that. Their normal #1 was injured for the middle part of the season and only returned to running around Conference time. Top 6 runners are back next year and 10 of 12 on their State roster are back.

What do you think?

Hmmmm... 8/9/09 CN girls ranked #6 in preseason poll
Hmmmm.... Fast forward to October CN girls win state

CN returns 5 of top 7
Are you hoping they can fly under the radar again?

Instead of sticking with the year after year favorite, a team returning this many should be ranked higher than #6. The champs are the champs at least until the first race. Unless you buy into the line of reasoning that everyone else just had a bad day. We heard that on both the boys and girls side. I believe luck is the residue of training. 2010 Edinburgh Sectional based on returners from 2009 Sectional (less the 2 graduating seniors for Columbus North's Girls):

Columbus North 32
Center Grove 33

Columbus North Returnees (next years grade):
1- Senior
2- Junior
3- Sophomore
4- Junior
5- Senior

Center Grove Returnees (next years grade):
1- Sophomore
2- Sophomore
3- Sophomore
4- Junior
5- Junior

Don't rule out the Trojans!

how in the world did you come to that conclusion? it seemed pretty straight forward to me. he's saying that you have CN ranked too low, hinting that you want them to fly under the radar again. he showed that seeing as they were the state champs and return 5 of 7 that they should be ranked number one preseason.
